What Is Diospyros celebica? Diospyros celebica is one of the most famous timber trees in the world. It is commonly known as Makassar Ebony, black ebony, or Indonesian ebony. Furthermore, the common name comes from Makassar — the main seaport on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. This species is endemic to Sulawesi. That means it grows naturally nowhere else on Earth. The tree grows wild in lowland rainforest and monsoon forest across South, Central, and West Sulawesi. Additionally, it thrives in several different soil types, including alluvial and volcanic soils. In its natural habitat, it often grows alongside sugar palms and rattan vines. Consequently, this association reflects the rich, complex forest ecosystem the species depends on. Makassar Ebony has been traded internationally since the Dutch colonial era. Primarily, its wood is famous for a bold striped pattern of dark brown, black, and golden-yellow tones — a colour combination found in no other ebony species. Furthermore, decades of overharvesting have placed serious pressure on wild populations. Indonesia’s government has since restricted unauthorised logging of this species. Induare Agro now offers ethically sourced, fresh seeds of this remarkable tree. This gives collectors and conservation-minded growers worldwide a legal, documented path to cultivating this true Indonesian icon. Aesthetic Features Diospyros celebica Diospyros celebica is a tall, stately evergreen tree with a commanding forest presence. It can reach up to 40 metres in height under ideal conditions. Furthermore, mature trees develop a thick, straight trunk. The trunk can grow up to 150 cm in diameter and often forms wide, flared supports — called buttress roots — at its base to anchor the tree in soft forest soil. Leaves and Bark The leaves of D. celebica are simple, smooth, and slightly leathery. They are arranged alternately along the branches. Additionally, the leaf surface is dark green and glossy, helping the tree thrive in the dense shade of the Sulawesi rainforest canopy. The bark is grey-brown and develops a rough, fissured texture as the tree matures. Furthermore, the dense, dark canopy gives the tree a striking silhouette against the surrounding forest. Flowers and Fruit Diospyros celebica produces small, pale flowers typical of the wider Diospyros genus. The flowers are not showy, but they lead to an edible fruit. Furthermore, the fruit resembles a small, round persimmon — a fitting trait, since the Diospyros genus also includes the well-known persimmon fruit trees. Consequently, local communities sometimes harvest the fruit, although the tree is grown almost entirely for its timber rather than its fruit production. The Famous Heartwood The true treasure of this species lies hidden inside the trunk. Primarily, the heartwood — the dense inner wood — displays a dramatic striped pattern. Bands of jet black contrast sharply with streaks of golden brown and reddish-yellow. Furthermore, no two pieces of Makassar Ebony look exactly alike. This natural variation is part of what makes the wood so highly prized for fine furniture, musical instruments, and luxury inlays worldwide. Global Seed Delivery & Phytosanitary Certification Induare Agro is a professional botanical seed exporter based in Indonesia. The company works directly with verified growers and conservation-focused sources across Sulawesi. Furthermore, Induare Agro ships rare and protected Indonesian tree species to collectors, botanical gardens, and research institutions in more than 50 countries. Every order follows a strict, fully documented export process to ensure full legal compliance. Packaging and Shipping Induare Agro packs every seed with professional moisture-control materials. Cushioned express packaging protects the seeds safely throughout the entire transit journey. Shipments go out via Global Express couriers such as DHL and FedEx. Additionally, most international orders arrive within 5–14 business days. Furthermore, every parcel includes an official Phytosanitary Certificate. This document is issued by Indonesia’s Plant Health Authority. It confirms that the seeds are free from pests, disease, and regulated plant pathogens. Consequently, it meets the import requirements of customs authorities in the EU, USA, UK, Australia, Japan, and most other regulated markets worldwide. Buyer Peace of Mind Induare Agro treats legal compliance as the top priority for every order. Every shipment includes the Phytosanitary Certificate and a full commercial invoice. Furthermore, this complete documentation ensures smooth and fast customs clearance at every destination. Additionally, since Diospyros celebica is a protected species in Indonesia, Induare Agro sources seeds only through verified, legal channels. Primarily, this guarantees buyers a fully ethical and traceable supply chain from forest to doorstep. How to Grow Diospyros celebica Diospyros celebica is a slow-growing but rewarding tree to cultivate from seed. Furthermore, it suits tropical and warm subtropical climates best. The key is patience, consistent warmth, and well-drained, fertile soil. Follow these steps for the best results. Step 1 — Seed Preparation Soak the seed in warm water (25–30°C) for 24 hours before planting. Additionally, this softens the outer seed coat and helps speed up germination. Step 2 — Growing Medium Use a rich, well-draining mix: 50% loamy potting soil, 30% compost, and 20% perlite or coarse sand. Consequently, this supports healthy root development while preventing waterlogging at the base. Step 3 — Sowing Plant the seed about 2–3 cm deep in a pot with good drainage holes. Furthermore, keep the growing medium consistently moist throughout the entire germination period. Step 4 — Temperature Maintain a steady temperature between 24°C and 32°C for best results. Primarily, this tropical species needs warm, stable conditions to germinate reliably. Step 5 — Light Place the pot in bright, indirect light during the seedling stage. Additionally, partial shade suits young plants well, mirroring the dense canopy shade of its native rainforest habitat. Step 6 — Watering Keep the soil moist but never waterlogged. Furthermore, root rot fungi are the most serious threat to young ebony trees. Always ensure the pot drains freely after every watering. Step 7 — Transplanting Move the seedling to a larger pot or permanent garden site once it reaches 25–30 cm tall. Consequently, more root space supports faster, healthier long-term growth. This species grows slowly, so patience is essential. Step 8 — Long-Term Care Apply a balanced organic fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10) every 6–8 weeks during the active growing season. Additionally, ensure excellent drainage and avoid soil compaction throughout the tree’s life. Furthermore, Diospyros celebica forms beneficial partnerships with soil fungi that help it absorb nutrients in poor forest soils. © Content produced for Induare Agro — Indonesia’s professional rare seed exporter.
