Museum-Grade Los Castillo Taxco Sodalite Bust – Mid-Century Mexican Modernism
$ 94.92
Categories: , Data Acquisition/ Recorders, Pool Poles
Hand-carved from a block of natural Sodalite this Mesoamerican chieftain carries the weight and prestige of the “Golden Era” of Taxco silversmithing and is symbolic of the towns role in historical trade routes. Our friend is poised, regal, and ready to sit on a coffee table of your choosing; he will quietly judge houseguests with a disdain unmatched by your current décor. The underside features the original authentic ‘LOS CASTILLO TAXCO’ hallmark struck into a domed metal rivet. This piece originates from the world-renowned taller established in 1939 by the Castillo brothers. This piece features the signature Los Castillo “Mosaico Azteca” style. The collar is a geometric joy featuring hand-fitted Black Onyx and Nacreous Shell triangles set into a gilt-metal channel – and we haven’t seen many examples of Los Castillo busts with this collar for sale lately so this one is special indeed. This piece is in excellent vintage condition. The carving is crisp with high-relief detailing with no loss seen. Note: The base is structurally sound; the original adhesive has aged, allowing the carving to be lifted from the plinth, but it sits perfectly flush and secure when displayed. There is fraying to the green felt base as seen in the photos. Length: 16cm H x 6cm W incl Base, circa 10cm H for the carving Weight: 296g total, sodalite when removed from base comes to 141g
